Roger Elkin Smith
Roger Elkin Smith, known affectionately as Roger to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2024, at the age of 69, in Cynthiana, KY. Born on October 28, 1954, in Paris, KY, Roger was a man whose warmth and charisma were as genuine as his smile.
Roger’s life was one of dedication and love, a journey that began in the heart of Kentucky and remained true to its roots. He was the beloved patriarch of a large and close-knit family, including his four children, Theresa Smith, Christina (Robert Ratliff) Smith, Colby (Ashley) Smith, and Doug (Kim Pence) Smith. His legacy continued through his five grandchildren, Gabrielle “Gabby” Smith, Dylan Smith, Jacob Ratliff, Jaden Ratliff, and Emily Ratliff, as well as his four great-grandchildren, Christian Raglin, Dakoda Raglin, Roman Raglin, and Greyson Raglin. Roger’s life was further enriched by the love and companionship of his two brothers, Mike Smith and Jamie “Sham” Smith, and his sister, Connie Soard, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Roger was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Frances Louise Edgington Smith, his father, Colby Elkin Smith, his mother, Pearl Townsend Smith, his son, Roger Smith, his brother, Dewayne Smith, and his great-grandchild, Savannah Raglin. Each of them held a special place in his heart, and he carried their memories with him every day.
A man of great skill and work ethic, Roger was the retired owner-operator of Roger E. Smith Construction. His professional life was marked by the same integrity and commitment that he brought to every aspect of his life. Roger’s colleagues and associates knew him as a man who built more than just structures; he built lasting relationships and a reputation for excellence.
Roger’s interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was an avid griller, a man who found joy in the simple pleasure of cooking for his family and friends. His love for mowing the yard was a testament to his appreciation for nature and the outdoors. A tinkerer at heart, Roger found solace and excitement in working on old cars, a hobby that allowed him to bring new life to the classics. His enthusiasm for sports was unwavering, as he was a dedicated fan of both the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cincinnati Reds. In his younger years, Roger loved to dance, a reflection of his spirited and joyful approach to life.
As we remember Roger, we are reminded of the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children… to leave the world a bit better… to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Roger embodied this sentiment, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him and ensuring that his presence would be felt for generations to come.
Roger’s life was a testament to the power of love, family, and hard work. His laughter, wisdom, and kindness will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take comfort in the knowledge that his spirit lives on through the lives he touched and the memories he created.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Roger Elkin Smith was a man who cherished every moment, and in turn, was cherished by all. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy will continue to inspire and guide us.
