Milton Sylvester and Margaret Patterson Jones on June 28, 1943 in Paris, Ky. She spent her early formative years in Philadelphia and always remembered her time there fondly. She attended Kentucky State University before enlisting in the Army.  After Sylvia was honorably discharged, she enrolled at Tennessee State University where she graduated with a degree in Sociology.
