Raymond Combs, Sr.

Raymond Combs, Sr., was born on July 5, 1939 and passed from this life to his Heavenly home on December 26, 2021. He was the son of the late Thomas and Maude Combs of Clayhole, Breathitt County, Kentucky. He leaves behind his loving wife, Dena Dwelly Combs, along with his children and scores of loved ones.
Raymond worked his younger years in construction, then later in logging and as a heavy equipment operator at Falcon Coal Company. He was a great supporter of the Clayhole Grace Brethren Church and saw many projects completed to help those in need. From traveling to foreign lands to assist in building churches, hospitals, and schools to lending a hand to his neighbors, Raymond embodied the Spirit of Christ. He was also a proud member of the Breathitt Masonic Lodge #649, F.& A.M. Jackson, Kentucky, and remembered with great reverence the history and good deeds of the group. He thought highly of his Masonic brothers.

While men often measure their wealth by material possessions, Raymond measured his by spending time with family. There was no way to calculate a price tag for the delight in a grandchild’s eyes whenever “treasures” of fossils or mysterious rocks were shared and made the center of a tall tale, or the gold equivalent of a big ol’ bearhug as he greeted one at the front door- these were the most valuable things that money could not buy and what he had an abundance of.

While he will be terribly missed in the interim, we take comfort in knowing he awaits us. As the old song “Canaan’s Land” goes, “I’m on my way to that fair land, where the soul of man never dies; where there will be no parting hand, Where the soul of man never dies,” and that’s exactly where Raymond is, in a fair, fair land.

Funeral arrangements will be handled by Breathitt Funeral Home Jackson, Kentucky. Interment will be at the Millersburg Cemetery in Millersburg, Kentucky. The family’s wish is that in lieu of flowers, they ask you to send tax-deductible donations to Alzheimer’s Association of Greater KY by calling 1-800-272-3900.
