Matt Avila Carrasco

Matt Avila Carrasco, 80, passed away Wednesday, August 2nd, 2023.

Matt was born October 4, 1942, to Matilde and Joe Carrasco in Midland, Texas. At the age of 4, his family moved from Texas to Shafter, California, where he and his 2 brothers and 3 sisters grew up. He graduated from Shafter High School in 1960 and worked at Nickkel Iron Works until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1964. He was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and served two years as a Military Police Officer, being honorably discharged in 1966.

In 1958 he met his wife, Priscilla Villarreal. They married on November 19th, 1966, surrounded by family and friends. Eventually settling in Bakersfield, California, Matt and Priscilla welcomed their first child into the world, Christina in 1967.  Three years later, they welcomed their second child, Matthew. As a family they loved camping at the lake and beach, every weekend as well as raising animals for Christina and Matthew’s 4-H and attending their sporting events.

Matt worked hard all his life as a contract welder and retired after 40 years. When he wasn’t at work, you would find him on the golf course, tending to his orchard, or watching the Chicago Cubs baseball games, “Go Cubs Go”. He was a devoted member of the Catholic Church attending mass at St. Philip Church and a proud 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was the best “Pop” to his granddaughters and great-grandchildren, always treating us to get ice cream or slurpees after he came home from work, playing golf with us in his backyard and teaching us how to drive on the country roads. As their family grew, Matt and Priscilla decided to make the move from California to Paris, Kentucky in December of 2018; where they spent his remaining years traveling to casinos, enjoying holidays, birthdays and special occasions with family.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Priscilla Carrasco; his daughter, Christina Tennison (Martin), and his son, Matthew Carrasco (Natalie); his granddaughters, Amanda Luse (Eric), Jessica Huggins (Kevin), Megan Tennison Johnson (Christopher), Evita and Maria Carrasco; his great-grandchildren Emily, Brayden and Dylan Luse, Kailee, Sadie and Gracelyn Huggins. He will be dearly missed by his sisters, Julie Pietz (Martin), and Patricia Pacheco (Sid Sr.) and his brother, Bibi Carrasco (Gloria) and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Matilde and Joe Carrasco, his brother Joe and his sister Cecelia; and niece, Julee Marie Turpin.

Funeral Mass will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday August 11, 2023, at the Church of the Annunciation, 1007 Main St., Paris, KY by Father Danny Fister.  Burial to follow in the Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, KY.
