Reverend James Barton Britton

Reverend James Barton Britton, husband of Mary Roy Britton, departed for his heavenly home, Tuesday, November 21, 2023, seven days after the sudden passing of his next to youngest brother, Thomas Augustus Britton. James, affectionately known as J.B., was the eldest son of the late Barton and Mary Frances Grinney Britton.
J.B. was extraordinarily gifted in mathematics and also musically inclined. He graduated as Valedictorian of the 1962 class from the old Western High School and went on to attend Kentucky State College. Before being able to graduate, he voluntarily joined the U.S. Army during the height of the Vietnam conflict. He served as a Morse Code Interceptor and Receiver at home and abroad.
At an early age, he accepted Christ at Zion Baptist Church, Paris, and later joined, with his family, the First Baptist Church, Paris. J.B. loved the Lord and was called into the ministry and ordained at First Baptist, Paris, under the pastorate of the late Reverend E. M. Johnson. While there, he learned to use his sharp mind to study, to teach, and to preach the Word of God. He later united with Bethel Baptist, Lexington, where under the leadership of Reverend Larry Wilson, he was able to carry out his God-ordained ministry. He was dedicated to rightly dividing the Word and was a graduate of Lexington Baptist Theological Seminary and received certifications from Simmons Bible College and the Consolidated District.
He used his natural engineering ability to serve as a Maintenance Engineer for Xerox before joining forces with Square D and retiring after more than 21 years as a tool and die machinist.
Throughout his life, J.B. was passionate about living out the Word, fellow- shipping and storytelling with family and friends and bowling.
Besides his parents and brother, he was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Howard and Addie Crooks Grinney, and paternal grandmother Rachel Barton Dickerson, along with uncle, James Grinney.
He leaves to cherish his memory, siblings: Robert “Bobby”. (Sara) Britton of Albany,Georgia; Phyllis (Jerry) Barnes; Howard Michael Britton; Cheryl Watkins and Richard Britton – all of Paris; brother-in-law, William (Debbie) Roy of Georgetown; sister-in-law, Emma (Willie) Meads of Lexington; special great-niece, Dezire Roy of Paris.
In addition, he leaves a host of nieces, nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews; along with a host of cousins, family and friends.
The funeral service was held on Friday, Dec. 1, 2023 at 11 a.m., Visitation was Friday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 552 Ash Street, Lexington, Ky 40508. Pastor Larry A. Wilson, officiated.
