Mary Lou Burns Rankin
Mary Lou Burns Rankin, a cherished matriarch and pillar of the Millersburg community, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on October 27, 1929, in Paris, Kentucky, Mary Lou’s life was a testament to her generous spirit, her unwavering kindness, and her thoughtful nature.
Mary Lou’s journey began as the daughter of William Taylor “W.T.” Burns and Mary Day Burns Parrish. Her early years in Paris, KY, were filled with the warmth of a close-knit family, a foundation that would guide her throughout her life. She carried the love and lessons of her parents, along with the memories of her late siblings, Helen Wells, Annette Williams, and Kenneth Burns, in her heart always.
Mary Lou found her life’s partner, Robert Forrest Rankin, and together they built a life full of love and hard work. After Robert’s passing, Mary Lou continued to embody the strength and resilience that characterized their time together. She was a devoted mother to her two sons, Gaylen “Frosty” Forrest Rankin and Michael (Kathryn) Rankin, and a doting grandmother to her granddaughter, Summer LeAnn (Drayton) Caudill, and great-grandson, Jase Caudill. Her family was her pride and joy, and she instilled in them the values of family, faith, and community.
Mary Lou’s entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as the co-owner of Rankin Hardware in Millersburg, with her husband. Her involvement in the community extended to her active participation in the Women’s Auxiliary, the Millersburg Garden Club, and the Millersburg Baptist Church. She was a beacon of service and leadership, always ready to lend a hand or share a kind word.
Her interests were as varied as they were heartfelt. Mary Lou was renowned for her culinary skills, especially her fried apple pies, which were made with an extra ingredient—love. She also volunteered her time to beautify Main Street in Millersburg, ensuring that the barrels she helped make were filled with vibrant flowers, reflecting her belief in the power of nurturing both people and places.
Mary Lou’s legacy is one of generosity and warmth. She was the kind of person who never hesitated to extend a helping hand or offer a comforting presence. Her life was a living example of the well-known quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson: “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Mary Lou’s success was measured not in material wealth but in the countless lives she touched and the community she helped flourish.
As we bid farewell to Mary Lou Rankin, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey marked by compassion, dedication, and grace. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Forrest Rankin; her parents; her grandson, Martin Forrest Rankin; her siblings; and leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew her.
