William Lee “Billy” Abney
William Lee “Billy” Abney, a lifelong resident of Paris, Kentucky, left a legacy of love, hard work, and cherished memories as he peacefully passed away in his hometown on March 17, 2026, at the age of 52. Billy’s journey began in the same small town on September 1, 1973, where he grew into a man of strong character and Christian faith, lovingly surrounded by a community that would one day celebrate his life with fond remembrance.
At his side for 33 beautiful years was his beloved wife, Lisa Wagner Abney, with whom he built a life grounded in devotion, laughter, and mutual respect. Their partnership was blessed with three wonderful children: Victoria Brooke (Jorge “JJ” Mendez) Tamara and her husband Drew Merrill, and Kaleb Abney. Billy wore the badge of grandfather with honor, as he doted on his grandchildren Zoey Ashcraft, Luca Mendez, Oliver Merrill, and Raelynn Merrill, cherishing every moment spent with them.
Billy was a revered member of the Abney family, a loving brother to Ernest Abney and Toni Leann Vasquezan affectionate stepbrother to Tina Watkins. His heart held a special place for his numerous nephews and nieces, who will miss his guiding hand and warm presence. He was welcomed to the gates of heaven by his parents, Donald and Elizabeth Watkins, his in-laws, Dora Coffey and William Thornsburg, and his siblings, Donald Watkins Jr. and Nancy Sumpter, who passed before him.
Throughout his life, Billy embodied the hardworking spirit of Kentucky as a dedicated farmer and factory worker. His commitment and associations within these industries not only provided for his family but also served as a testament to his determination and work ethic.
Billy’s Christian faith was deeply rooted in all aspects of his life, providing him with strength and comfort. In his free time, he cherished being around family and friends, creating memories that would outlive him. The laughter and joy in Billy’s home were abundant, especially when he was surrounded by his grandchildren, with whom he shared his kindhearted spirit and love for life.
William Lee Abney’s legacy will live on through the lives of those he touched, the soil he tended to, and the bonds of family that he fortified with his love and hard work. As we say farewell, we take comfort in the echoes of his laughter and the dedication he showed to the ones he loved most. His memory will be a guiding light for all who had the pleasure of knowing him, and his story will be told with pride by the generations that follow.
