Josephine McKee Hughes
Josephine McKee Hughes, 90, wife of 64 years to the late Gerald Hughes, passed away Monday, June 22, 2026 at her home in Lexington.
Born February 24, 1936 in Nicholas County to the late Bruce Owens and Eunice Belle Callahan McKee, she was a 1955 graduate of Nicholas County High School, where she was voted “Prettiest Girl” by her class. Jo devoted herself to her family and later worked for C.H. Parsons Department Store in Ashland when her children were in school. She was a member of Westwood-Enterprise Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for many years. Jo greatly enjoyed raising her flower gardens, cooking for the family and doing needlework, both sewing and embroidery.
Surviving are two children, Pamela (David) Sullivan of Fairview, Tennessee and Duane (Lori) Hughes of Ashland; a sister, Jeannette (James A.) Hicks of Lexington; four grandchildren: Christin (Stephen) Lotz, Jeremy Sullivan, Austin (Sarabeth) Hughes and Lauren (Cody) Fannin; three great-grandchildren: Harper Lotz and Christian and Carson Hughes; several wonderful nieces and nephews; and a special great-niece and caregiver, Niah Soult.
Also preceding her in death were 10 brothers and sisters: Julian, Melvin, Glenn, Edward, Leonard, Willard and R.C. McKee, Wilma Jolly, Jean Bretz and Lena Mitchell, and a great-grandson, Connor Jude Hughes.
Services were 1:00 P.M. Friday, June 26th at Mathers-Gaunce Funeral Home by Rev. David Sullivan and burial followed in Carlisle Cemetery.
Visitation was from 12:00 Noon until the time of service.
