Meeting on uncertain future for North Middletown Elementary School to be held July 15

MIDDLETOWN, Ky. (FOX 56) — Residents in a rural Bourbon County community sound the alarm over speculation about the possible closure of their local school. The elementary school in North Middletown has been a staple in the community for decades, with residents calling it a source of pride for their small town. But questions about the school’s future grew after recent conversations about a possible closure.

“That’s kind of the finality that we and everybody are looking at,” Mayor Jeff McFarland said. “It’s not a definite, but it’s possible and maybe even a probable outcome.” McFarland said Bourbon County Schools is currently developing its facilities plan, which would address the needs of all district buildings. During the most recent planning meeting, he said the possibility of closing North Middletown Elementary School was discussed, an outcome he believes would be a disservice to the community. “The past several years, North Middletown has been right at the top of the county with the testing of their students. So, the instruction is there. Unfortunately, I think it’ll come down to a matter of economics,” McFarland said.
