Don Mace

Don Mace, age 68, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026 at his farm in Carlisle, Kentucky. A master horseman and dedicated trainer, Don was a man of immense kindness and laughter who left an indelible mark on the equine community and the lives of everyone who knew him.
Born April 26, 1958 in Kansas City, Missouri, Don was a cherished son of the late Allen Eugene Mace and Edna Wood Clement. From an early age, he possessed a natural gift for understanding horses that became a lifelong respected career. Don’s professional journey began in Oregon where he spent 25 foundational years working under the mentorship of his father and for Mr. Lyle Cobb in Beaverton. His expertise and reputation took him across the country to Callaway Hills Stables in Missouri and later to Light Farms Hackney Ponies in Illinois. Ultimately, Don realized his dream of establishing his own training operation in Carlisle, Kentucky where he specialized in developing young American Saddlebred horses and served as a mentor to many horsemen. In addition to his talents as a trainer, Don dedicated his life to every aspect of equine care and was a skilled farrier. Don was a member of the American Saddlebred Horse Association, American Hackney Horse Society, United Professional Horseman’s Association, South Central Hackney Association, Northwest Saddlebred Association, and United States Equestrian Federation.
When he wasn’t in the barn, Don loved spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. He was well known as an avid competitive nine-ball player. Don frequently volunteered his time and talents as an auctioneer for charity events. Those around Don knew he was always willing to lend a hand, share his wisdom if asked, or offer a warm word of encouragement. Above all, Don was known for his genuine character, easy warmth, and love of a good joke or story. He possessed a quick wit and thoroughly enjoyed sharing jokes and laughter with friends and strangers alike.
Don is survived by his son, Peter Mace of Shelbyville, Kentucky; his stepdaughter, Brandy Lynn Griffith (Cox) of Carlton, Oregon; and two brothers, Karl “Kim” Mace and his wife Paula of Hartman, Arkansas, and John “Mickey” Mace and wife Kelly of Centerton, Arkansas. He also leaves behind a large extended family, many dear friends, and the horse community that he loved so much.
The family will hold a private ceremony at a later date to celebrate Don’s life. To honor Don’s love of humor and stories, please share one of your memories with the family in lieu of flowers.
