Kentucky American Water Celebrates Earth Day with Water-Saving Tips and Drug Take Back Day Event

LEXINGTON, Ky. – April 21, 2026 – In recognition of Earth Day, Kentucky American Water is highlighting the importance of protecting local water resources through environmental stewardship, strategic infrastructure investment and community engagement — including hosting a National Prescription Drug Take Back Day collection event later this week.
Serving approximately 550,000 customers across the Commonwealth, Kentucky American Water works year-round to protect water at its source while delivering safe, reliable service to homes and businesses.
“Protecting water starts long before it reaches the tap,” said Rob Burton, President of Kentucky American Water. “Our employees are committed every day to strengthening infrastructure, safeguarding local waterways and supporting the communities we serve.”
As part of those efforts, Kentucky American Water will host National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 25, in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Unused, unwanted and expired medications may be safely and anonymously disposed of at Kentucky American Water, 2300 Richmond Road in Lexington, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Take Back Day events help keep medications out of the wrong hands and out of the environment by providing a safe alternative to flushing medications or pouring them down the drain — actions that can allow pharmaceuticals to enter local waterways.
“Proper medication disposal is a simple and impactful way to protect our water resources,” Burton added. “Events like Drug Take Back Day give customers an easy way to dispose of medications safely while helping protect public health and the environment.”
Kentucky American Water also encourages customers to take simple steps at home to conserve water and protect our vital resource, including fixing leaks, turning off the tap while brushing teeth, running full loads of laundry and dishes, and properly disposing of household items such as batteries, paint and unused medications.
“Small actions can make a big difference,” Burton said. “When utilities, communities and customers work together to protect water resources, we help ensure clean, reliable water for future generations.”
