Ruby was blessed to have many dear and devoted friends she collected as she traveled through her long and active life, including her very special caregiver Shvonda Johnson.
Ruby was raised by her maternal grandmother Lena Raney Dunham. She graduated from Old Bourbon County High School and attended Fugazzi Business College. Ruby was a talented seamstress and, as a young woman, she was very active with sewing and leadership in the 4-H Club, where she was recognized with numerous awards for her clothing design. She was a devoted and involved mother to her beloved son Steven during his school years in Bourbon County. She served as PTA president, was active in her community as a past member and president of the American Legion Auxiliary and past member of the Eastern Star. She and Vordon lived in Paris until she moved to Lexington after Vordon’s death in 2004.
Ruby worked in the County Extension Office prior to joining the administrative staff of Bourbon Heights Nursing Home in 1967, where she worked until retirement in 1994 and served as a board member for a total span of 55 years. She was honored by Bourbon Heights in 2021 for her service to the nursing facility and her role in the planning and construction of the re-dedicated “Ruby Slade Chapel” at Bourbon Heights.
Ruby was an avid collector of antiques as well as a fixture at area estate auctions well into her 90’s, where she also collected several of her closest friends. Ruby adored dogs and they enriched her life, especially her beloved Ellie who was a steadfast companion and gave her purpose during the isolation of the COVID pandemic.
