Kevin Brent Varney

Kevin Brent Varney, a cherished husband, father, son, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2024, in Lexington, KY, at the age of 62. Born on February 3, 1962, in Huntington, WV, to Betty Jewell Baisden Varney and the late Eugene M. Varney, Kevin’s life was a testament to his unwavering faith, selfless nature, and infectious humor.
Kevin’s journey through life was marked by his devotion to his family and his community. He shared 33 beautiful years of marriage with his loving wife, June Ann Hardy Varney, and together they raised three wonderful children: Lauren Elizabeth (Timothy John) Kelly, Aaron Varney, and Olivia Nicole Varney. His joy was multiplied with the birth of his grandson, Skyler Elijah Varney, who became the apple of his eye.
Kevin’s commitment to service was evident in every aspect of his life. Starting with earning his Eagle Scout badge and after graduating from Marshall University with a Bachelor of Criminal Justice Degree, he went on to serve his country with honor as a Military Police officer in the United States Army. His dedication to protecting and serving continued in his civilian life as he joined the Lexington Kentucky Police Department. For 24 years, Kevin wore the badge with pride, retiring as a Sergeant, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and courage.
A man of deep faith, Kevin was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Richmond, KY, where he found strength and solace in his relationship with God. His faith was the cornerstone of his existence, guiding him through life’s challenges and inspiring those around him.
Kevin’s sense of humor was legendary. He was a jokester at heart, always ready with a quip or a prank to lighten the mood. His laughter was contagious, and his ability to bring joy to any situation was one of his most endearing qualities.
An avid outdoorsman, Kevin found peace and relaxation in fishing, a pastime that allowed him to bask in the beauty of nature and the simplicity of life. His love for his family was paralleled only by his love for God and his community. Kevin’s selflessness was evident in every act of kindness, every moment spent mentoring young officers, and every Sunday spent in the pews of his church.
Kevin is survived by his devoted wife, June; his mother, Betty; his children, Lauren (Timothy), Aaron, and Olivia; his grandson, Skyler; his siblings, Pamela, Michael (Terry), and Steven (Jerri); and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss him dearly.
Preceded in death by his father, Eugene M. Varney, Kevin now rests in the loving embrace of the Lord, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering commitment to his fellow man.
Kevin Brent Varney lived a life that was faith-filled, selfless, and funny. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the stories told, the lives he touched, and the community he served with such distinction. As we say farewell to a man who was a beacon of light in the lives of many, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to guide us, just as it always has.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Kevin Brent Varney will be deeply missed, but the impact of his life’s work and the warmth of his love will be felt for generations to come.
