Paul Ervin Lyons
Paul Ervin Lyons, husband of Mona Haney Lyons, passed away Saturday, October 28, 2023 at his residence in Carlisle, KY. He was a 91 year old born in Bath County, Ky to the union of the late William and Hester Hawkins Lyons, an Army Veteran, farmer and member of Peyton Lick Christian Church.
He proudly served in the Army during the 1950s, most of which time he was stationed in Missouri. Paul raised tobacco for decades and was a lifelong cattle farmer. Paul loved the farm with all his heart and took pride in his crops and flower and vegetable gardens every year. He built a greenhouse at his home and enjoyed growing all of his vegetables and flowers from seed. He presented Mona with flowers from the garden every Sunday. Paul also raised and sold chrysanthemums and enjoyed taking visitors to the mum patch. He was a sales clerk for McCormick Land and Auction, and graded tobacco at Central District Tobacco Warehouse. Paul also took pride in his advocacy for local farmers. He worked diligently in helping to get a water line through the Little Rock community. Paul coached a regional softball team for young men ages 16-18 for many years, and took one team to nationals after winning the state championship. He enjoyed cooked barbecue pork dinners for Bourbon County FFA banquets, the Little Rock Volunteer Fire Department, for weddings, political and other events throughout the state of Kentucky. Paul Hosted an annual community party in October for over ten years at his pumpkin patch, where local children each took home “any pumpkin you are big enough to carry.” One of Paul’s favorite pastimes was joking and having breakfast with his friends at the Judy store.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mona Haney Lyons; 2 sons, Randy Lyons (Lezlie) and Darrell Lyons; a grandson, Morgan Lyons (Marie); a sister, Roxy Crowe; a sister-in-law, Patty Haney; a nephew, Charles Compton (Betty), along with several other family members and friends. In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Lyons; and 3 sisters, Margaret Manning, Eula “Tuggie” Shields and Grace Wightman.
His funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 2, 2023 at Herald & Stewart Home for Funerals, Bros. Charles Perry and Rex Graham presiding with burial to follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at the funeral home.
Pallbearers are Edwin Burden, Randy Russell, Jimmy Banks, Ron Robinette, Dustin Williams and Jamie Hedges. Honorary Pallbearers are Nelson Dunaway, Bill Ginter, Bill Johnson, Ronnie Johnson, Charles Johnson, Chuck Vice, Edgar Jones, Harold Grooms and Rex Rawlings.
