Earl McDonald
Earl McDonald, known affectionately by his family as “Rod”, passed away peacefully at home on December 14, 2024 at the age of 81. Born on August 2, 1943, in Frankfort, KY, he was a man whose strong work ethic and self-discipline remain obvious to everyone who knew him.
Earl lived what he believed, never tried to be something he wasn’t and was a man of strength, courage and heart. His life was one of hard work, strong will, dedication and fierce love for his family. He believed that hard work would get you everywhere while laziness got you nowhere.
He was a great horseman, took pride in his work and loved what he did. While he never had a horse in the Kentucky Derby, he trained them all as if they were Derby hopefuls.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Lisa McDonald West (Johnathon); his adored grandson, Logan West; his four sisters, Ruth Ann Blankenship, Judith Schweinufus, Kathy Buckler, Barbara Sue Trickler (Charlie), his little dog, Tiny; his lifelong friend, Jerry Brumley, and too many to name cherished nieces and nephews who will fondly remember the lessons learned and laughter they shared.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, John and Brucie Dunaway McDonald; his brothers, Pete “Sadie” McDonald, Buck McDonald and Junior McDonald; his sisters, Polly Fryman, Debbie Kay McCarty, and Mary Buckler. Each of them played a significant role in his life, and their memories will continue to be honored by those who loved them.
As we bid farewell to Earl, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey filled with joy, challenges, and triumphs. Earl’s memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his influence will be felt for generations to come.
